With support from the Maine Health Access Foundation, the Coalition's Education
Committee produced "Maine Smiles Matter: An Early Childhood Caries Prevention
and Intervention Program for Non-Dental Providers." This is a curriculum that
provides information about prevention of and interventions for early childhood
caries for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses,
nutritionists, and others working with young children and their primary
caregivers. Topics covered include prenatal care, tooth decay, early childhood
caries, risk factors for tooth decay, prevention, what to do and how to do it,
and children with special health care needs. A quick reference guide and a
videotape are also included, along with a brochure titled "How to Keep My Baby's
Mouth Healthy" and a tooth identification chart. The information is also
provided on a CD.
