Saving Smiles and Swan's Island
Smiles to Swan's and Schools
Thanks to Oral Health America, Watch Your Mouth was able to give two minigrants for school based oral health projects.
Saving Smiles, a Windsor based non-profit offering preventive dental services and education to schools, was able to incorporate the WYM message in their education efforts, reaching 1416 students in seven schools with dental education and providing 99 dental screenings and 37 sealants along the way.
On Swan's Island the minigrant helped connect the school with hygienists from the Sea Coast Mission who provided an initial oral screening for all students, and who will return this fall.
One of the Island's monthly senior luncheon programs- where elders eat lunch with the school's 32 children- was devoted to oral health! Younger students created a mural with their senior friend (see photo) about all things dental, while older students interviewed the elders about what dental care was like growing up on the island. These interviews were made into a video for the library's history collection. Check it out the next time you visit the Island. |
